The instructions in this manual are for the twomodels listed in the table below. Before you startreading this manual and operating yourcamcorder, check the model number by lookingat the bottom of your camcorder. The
CCD-TR950E is the model used for illustrationpurposes. Otherwise, the model name isindicated in the illustrations. Any differences inoperation are clearly indicated in the text, forexample, “CCD-TR950E only.”

Note on TV colour systems
TV colour systems differ from country tocountry. To view your recordings on a TV, youneed a PAL system-based TV.

Unauthorized recording of such materials maybe contrary to the provision of the copyrightlaws.
Precautions on camcorder care
• The colour viewfinder is manufactured usinghigh-precision technology. However, theremay be some tiny black spots and/or brightspots (red, blue or green in colour) thatconstantly appear in the viewfinder. Thesespots occur normally in the manufacturingprocess and do not affect the recordedpicture in any way. Effective number ofpixels is 99.99% or more. (CCD-TR950E only)
• Do not let your camcorder get wet. Keep yourcamcorder away from rain and sea water.
Letting your camcorder get wet may cause yourcamcorder to malfunction. Sometimes thismalfunction cannot be repaired [a].
• Never leave your camcorder exposed totemperatures above 60°C (140°F ), such as in acar parked in the sun or under direct sunlight
[b].
• Do not place your camcorder so as to point theviewfinder toward the sun. The inside of theviewfinder may be damaged [c].

Installing the battery pack
Install the battery pack to use your camcorderoutdoors.
Slide the battery pack down.
To remove the battery pack
Slide the battery pack out in the direction of thearrow while pressing BATT RELEASE down.
After installing the battery pack
Do not carry your camcorder by holding thebattery pack. If you do so, the battery pack mayslide off your camcorder unintentionally,damaging your camcorder.

Step 1 Preparing the powersupply
Charging the battery pack
Use the battery pack after charging it for yourcamcorder.
Your camcorder operates only with the
“InfoLITHIUM” battery pack (L series).
“InfoLITHIUM” is a trademark of Sony
Corporation.
(1)Open the DC IN jack cover and connect the
AC power adaptor supplied with yourcamcorder to the DC IN jack with the plug’s 4mark facing up.
(2)Connect the mains lead to the AC poweradaptor.
(3)Connect the mains lead to the mains.
(4)Set the POWER switch to OFF. Chargingbegins. The remaining battery time isindicated in minutes on the display window.
When the remaining battery indicator changes toi, normal charge is completed. To fully chargethe battery (full charge), leave the battery packattached for about 1 hour after normal charge iscompleted until FULL appears in the displaywindow. Fully charging the battery allows you touse the battery longer than usual.

Note
Prevent metallic objects from coming into contactwith the metal parts of the DC plug of the ACpower adaptor. This may cause a short-circuit,damaging the AC power adaptor.
Remaining battery time indicator
The remaining battery time indicator in thedisplay window roughly indicates the recordingtime.
Battery pack
The battery pack is charged a little before itleaves the factory.
Until your camcorder calculates the actualremaining battery time

If there is a slight difference in shape betweenthe plug of mains lead and the terminal of ACpower adaptor
It is ignorable for their mutual connection andpower supply.
Plug the mains lead deeply
Be sure to plug the mains lead deeply into theterminal of AC power adaptor so that it is firmlylocked. If there is a gap between the plug ofmains lead and the terminal of AC poweradaptor, it does not affect the efficiency of the
AC power adaptor.

Connecting to the mains
When you use your camcorder for a long time,we recommend that you power it from the mainsusing the AC power adaptor.
(1)Open the DC IN jack cover, and connect the
AC power adaptor to the DC IN jack on yourcamcorder with the plug’s 4 mark facing up.
(2)Connect the mains lead to the AC poweradaptor.
(3)Connect the mains lead to the mains.
WARNING
The mains lead must only be changed at aqualified service shop.
PRECAUTION
The set is not disconnected from the AC powersource (mains) as long as it is connected to themains, even if the set itself has been turned off.
Notes
• The AC power adaptor can supply power evenif the battery pack is attached to yourcamcorder.
• The DC IN jack has “source priority”. Thismeans that the battery pack cannot supply anypower if the mains lead is connected to the DC
IN jack, even when the mains lead is notplugged into the mains.
• Keep the AC power adaptor away from thecamcorder if the picture is disturbed.

When you want to record in the Hi8 system, use
Hi8 video cassette H.
(1) Slide EJECT in the direction of the arrowwhile pressing the small blue button. Thecassette compartment automatically lifts upand opens.
(2) Insert a cassette with its window facing outand the tab on the cassette up.
(3) Close the cassette compartment by pressingthe “PUSH” mark on the cassettecompartment. The cassette compartmentautomatically goes down.

Recording a picture
Your camcorder automatically focuses for you.
(1)Install the power source and insert a cassette.
See “Step 1” and “Step 2” for moreinformation (p. 12 to 18).
(2)Set the POWER switch to CAMERA whilepressing the small green button. The lenscover opens.
(3)Turn STANDBY to STANDBY.

Using the zoom feature
Move the power zoom lever a little for a slowerzoom. Move it further for a faster zoom.
Using the Zoom function sparingly results inbetter-looking recordings.
“T” side: for telephoto (subject appears closer)
“W” side: for wide-angle (subject appears fartheraway)
Zoom greater than 20· is performed digitally.
When you shoot close to a subject
If you cannot get a sharp focus, move the powerzoom lever to the “W” side until the focus issharp. You can shoot a subject that is at leastabout 80 cm (about 2 feet 5/8 inch) away fromthe lens surface in the telephoto position, orabout 1 cm (about 1/2 inch) away in thewide-angle position.
Notes on digital zoom
• Digital zoom starts to function when zoomexceeds 20· .
• The picture quality deteriorates as you gotoward the “T” side. Set D ZOOM to OFF in the
MENU settings. Otherwise the digital zoomactivates without notice (p. 64).

• Do not use the NightShot function in brightplaces (ex. outdoors in the daytime). This maycause your camcorder to malfunction.

Superimposing the date andtime on pictures
You can record the date or time displayed in theviewfinder superimposed on the picture.
Carry out the following operations in the standbyor recording mode.
Press DATE to record the date.
Press TIME to record the time.
Press DATE (or TIME), then press TIME (or
DATE) to record the date and time.
Press DATE and/or TIME again. The date and/or time indicator disappears.
The clock is set at the factory to London time for
United Kingdom to Paris time for the other
European countries. You can reset the clock inthe MENU settings (p. 64).

Using the AV cordless IRreceiver
Once you connect the AV cordless IR receiver
(not supplied) to your TV or VCR, you can easilyview the picture on your TV. For details, refer tothe operating instructions of the AV cordless IRreceiver.
(1)After connecting your TV and AV cordless IRreceiver, set the POWER switch on the AVcordless IR receiver to ON.
(2)Turn the TV on and set the TV/VCR selectoron the TV to VCR.
(3)Press LASER LINK. The lamp of LASER LINKlights up.
(4)Press ( on your camcorder to start playback.
(5)Point the LASER LINK emitter at the AVcordless IR receiver. Adjust the position ofyour camcorder and the AV cordless IRreceiver to obtain clear playback pictures.
To cancel the laser link function
Press LASER LINK. The lamp on the LASER
LINK button goes out.
If you turn the power off
Laser link turns off automatically.
Note
When laser link is activated (the LASER LINKbutton is lit), your camcorder consumes power.

Playing back a tape
You can monitor the playback picture on a TVscreen after connecting your camcorder to a TVor VCR. You can also monitor the picture in theviewfinder.
You can control playback using the Remote
Commander supplied with your camcorder.
(1) Install the power source and insert therecorded tape.

This mode is useful when you want to record apicture such as a photograph or when you print apicture using a video printer (not supplied).

(2)Keep pressing PHOTO lightly until a stillpicture appears. CAPTURE appears.
Recording does not start yet.

– Digital effect
You can add special effects to recorded picturesusing the various digital functions. The sound isrecorded normally.

Using special effects
– Digital effect
(1)While your camcorder is in the standby orrecording mode, press DIGITAL EFFECT. Thedigital effect indicator appears.
(2)Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select thedesired digital effect mode.
The indicator changes as follows:STILL FLASH LUMI. TRAIL SLOW SHTR OLD MOVIE
(3)Press the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial. The indicatorlights up and the bars appear. In the STILLand LUMI. modes, the still picture is stored inmemory.
(4)Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to adjust theeffect.
Items to adjust
STILL The rate of the still picture youwant to superimpose on themoving picture
FLASH The interval of flash motion
LUMI. The colour scheme of the area inthe still picture which is to beswapped with a moving picture
TRAIL The vanishing time of theincidental image
SLOW SHTR Shutter speed. The larger theshutter speed number, the slowerthe shutter speed.
OLD MOVIE No adjustment necessary

Using the PROGRAM
AE function
You can select PROGRAM AE (Auto Exposure)mode to suit your specific shooting requirements.
Spotlight mode
This mode prevents people’s faces, for example,from appearing excessively white when shootingsubjects lit by strong light at weddings or in thetheatre.a Soft portrait mode
This mode brings out the subject while creating asoft background for subjects such as people orflowers, and faithfully reproduces skin colour.
A Sports lesson mode
This mode minimizes shake on fast-movingsubjects such as in tennis or golf.
Beach & ski mode
This mode prevents peoples’ faces fromappearing dark in strong light or reflected light,such as at a beach in midsummer or on a skislope.
Sunset & moon mode
This mode allows you to maintain atmospherewhen you are recording sunsets, general nightviews, fireworks displays and neon signs.
Landscape mode
This mode is for when you are recording distantsubjects such as mountains and prevents yourcamcorder from focusing on glass or metal meshin windows when you are recording a subjectbehind glass or a screen.
Low lux mode
This mode makes subjects brighter in insufficientlight.

You can manually adjust and set the exposure.
When you turn your camcorder on, it willautomatically be in the automatic exposuremode. This mode works to record subjects so thatthey are recorded slightly brighter than theyactually are.
Adjust the exposure manually in the followingcases:• The subject is backlit
• Bright subject and dark background
• To record dark pictures (e.g. night scenes)faithfully
(1) Press EXPOSURE in the standby or recordingmode.
The exposure indicator appears.
(2) Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to adjust thebrightness.
To return to the automatic exposuremode
Press EXPOSURE again.

To record distant subjects
When you press FOCUS down to INFINITY, thelens focuses on infinity. When you release
FOCUS, your camcorder returns to the manualfocus mode. Use this mode when your camcorderfocuses on near objects even though you aretrying to shoot a distant object.
Shooting in relatively dark places or shootingfast-moving subjects in relatively bright places
Shoot at the “W” (wide-angle) position afterfocusing at the “T” (telephoto) position.
When you shoot close to the subject
Focus at the end of the “W” (wide-angle)position.

Superimposing a title
You can select one of eight preset titles and twocustom titles (p. 55). You can also select thelanguage, colour, size and position of titles.
(1)Press TITLE in the standby mode.
(2)Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select ,then press the dial.
(3)Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select thedesired title, then press the dial. The titles aredisplayed in the language you selected.
(4)Change the colour, size, or position, ifnecessary.
1 Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to selectthe colour, size, or position, then press thedial. The item appears.
2 Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to selectthe desired item, then press the dial.
3 Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the title is laidout as desired.

Using this manual
The instructions in this manual are for the twomodels listed in the table below. Before you startreading this manual and operating yourcamcorder, check the model number by lookingat the bottom of your camcorder. The

Precautions on camcorder care
• The colour viewfinder is manufactured usinghigh-precision technology. However, theremay be some tiny black spots and/or brightspots (red, blue or green in colour) thatconstantly appear in the viewfinder. Thesespots occur normally in the manufacturingprocess and do not affect the recordedpicture in any way. Effective number ofpixels is 99.99% or more. (CCD-TR950E only)
• Do not let your camcorder get wet. Keep yourcamcorder away from rain and sea water.
Letting your camcorder get wet may cause yourcamcorder to malfunction. Sometimes thismalfunction cannot be repaired [a].
• Never leave your camcorder exposed totemperatures above 60°C (140°F ), such as in acar parked in the sun or under direct sunlight
[b].
• Do not place your camcorder so as to point theviewfinder toward the sun. The inside of theviewfinder may be damaged [c].

Installing the battery pack
Install the battery pack to use your camcorderoutdoors.
Slide the battery pack down.
To remove the battery pack
Slide the battery pack out in the direction of thearrow while pressing BATT RELEASE down.
After installing the battery pack
Do not carry your camcorder by holding thebattery pack. If you do so, the battery pack mayslide off your camcorder unintentionally,damaging your camcorder.

Step 1 Preparing the powersupply
Charging the battery pack
Use the battery pack after charging it for yourcamcorder.
Your camcorder operates only with the
“InfoLITHIUM” battery pack (L series).
“InfoLITHIUM” is a trademark of Sony
Corporation.
(1)Open the DC IN jack cover and connect the
AC power adaptor supplied with yourcamcorder to the DC IN jack with the plug’s 4mark facing up.
(2)Connect the mains lead to the AC poweradaptor.
(3)Connect the mains lead to the mains.
(4)Set the POWER switch to OFF. Chargingbegins. The remaining battery time isindicated in minutes on the display window.
When the remaining battery indicator changes toi, normal charge is completed. To fully chargethe battery (full charge), leave the battery packattached for about 1 hour after normal charge iscompleted until FULL appears in the displaywindow. Fully charging the battery allows you touse the battery longer than usual.

Note

Remaining battery time indicator
The remaining battery time indicator in thedisplay window roughly indicates the recordingtime.
Battery pack
The battery pack is charged a little before itleaves the factory.
Until your camcorder calculates the actualremaining battery time

If there is a slight difference in shape betweenthe plug of mains lead and the terminal of ACpower adaptor
It is ignorable for their mutual connection andpower supply.
Plug the mains lead deeply
Be sure to plug the mains lead deeply into theterminal of AC power adaptor so that it is firmlylocked. If there is a gap between the plug ofmains lead and the terminal of AC poweradaptor, it does not affect the efficiency of the

Connecting to the mains
When you use your camcorder for a long time,we recommend that you power it from the mainsusing the AC power adaptor.
(1)Open the DC IN jack cover, and connect the
AC power adaptor to the DC IN jack on yourcamcorder with the plug’s 4 mark facing up.
(2)Connect the mains lead to the AC poweradaptor.
(3)Connect the mains lead to the mains.
WARNING
The mains lead must only be changed at aqualified service shop.
PRECAUTION
The set is not disconnected from the AC powersource (mains) as long as it is connected to themains, even if the set itself has been turned off.
Notes
• The AC power adaptor can supply power evenif the battery pack is attached to yourcamcorder.
• The DC IN jack has “source priority”. Thismeans that the battery pack cannot supply anypower if the mains lead is connected to the DC
IN jack, even when the mains lead is notplugged into the mains.
• Keep the AC power adaptor away from thecamcorder if the picture is disturbed.

When you want to record in the Hi8 system, use
Hi8 video cassette H.
(1) Slide EJECT in the direction of the arrowwhile pressing the small blue button. Thecassette compartment automatically lifts upand opens.
(2) Insert a cassette with its window facing outand the tab on the cassette up.
(3) Close the cassette compartment by pressingthe “PUSH” mark on the cassettecompartment. The cassette compartmentautomatically goes down.

Recording a picture
Your camcorder automatically focuses for you.
(1)Install the power source and insert a cassette.
See “Step 1” and “Step 2” for moreinformation (p. 12 to 18).
(2)Set the POWER switch to CAMERA whilepressing the small green button. The lenscover opens.
(3)Turn STANDBY to STANDBY.

To enable smooth transition
You can make the transition between the lastscene you recorded and the next scene smooth aslong as you do not eject the cassette. When youexchange the battery pack in the recording mode,set STANDBY to LOCK.

Using the zoom feature
Move the power zoom lever a little for a slowerzoom. Move it further for a faster zoom.
Using the Zoom function sparingly results inbetter-looking recordings.
“T” side: for telephoto (subject appears closer)
“W” side: for wide-angle (subject appears fartheraway)
Zoom greater than 20· is performed digitally.
When you shoot close to a subject
If you cannot get a sharp focus, move the powerzoom lever to the “W” side until the focus issharp. You can shoot a subject that is at leastabout 80 cm (about 2 feet 5/8 inch) away fromthe lens surface in the telephoto position, orabout 1 cm (about 1/2 inch) away in thewide-angle position.
Notes on digital zoom
• Digital zoom starts to function when zoomexceeds 20· .
• The picture quality deteriorates as you gotoward the “T” side. Set D ZOOM to OFF in the
MENU settings. Otherwise the digital zoomactivates without notice (p. 64).

(NightShot)
The NightShot function enables you to shoot asubject in a dark place. For example, you cansatisfactorily record the environment ofnocturnal animals for observation when you usethis function.

• Do not use the NightShot function in brightplaces (ex. outdoors in the daytime). This maycause your camcorder to malfunction.
• When you keep setting NIGHTSHOT to ON innormal recording, the picture may be recordedin incorrect or unnatural colours.

Recording a picture
Superimposing the date andtime on pictures
You can record the date or time displayed in theviewfinder superimposed on the picture.
Carry out the following operations in the standbyor recording mode.
Press DATE to record the date.
Press TIME to record the time.
Press DATE (or TIME), then press TIME (or
DATE) to record the date and time.
Press DATE and/or TIME again. The date and/or time indicator disappears.
The clock is set at the factory to London time for
United Kingdom to Paris time for the other
European countries. You can reset the clock inthe MENU settings (p. 64).
Note
The date and time indicators recorded manuallycannot be deleted.

Using the AV cordless IRreceiver
Once you connect the AV cordless IR receiver
(not supplied) to your TV or VCR, you can easilyview the picture on your TV. For details, refer tothe operating instructions of the AV cordless IRreceiver.
(1)After connecting your TV and AV cordless IRreceiver, set the POWER switch on the AVcordless IR receiver to ON.
(2)Turn the TV on and set the TV/VCR selectoron the TV to VCR.
(3)Press LASER LINK. The lamp of LASER LINKlights up.
(4)Press ( on your camcorder to start playback.
(5)Point the LASER LINK emitter at the AVcordless IR receiver. Adjust the position ofyour camcorder and the AV cordless IRreceiver to obtain clear playback pictures.
To cancel the laser link function
Press LASER LINK. The lamp on the LASER

If you turn the power off
Laser link turns off automatically.

You can record a cinema-like picture (CINEMA)or a 16:9 wide picture to watch on the 16:9 wide-screen TV (16:9 FULL). Refer to the operatinginstructions of your TV.
CINEMA
Black bands appear on the screen duringrecording in the CINEMA mode [a], playingback on a normal TV [b] or a wide-screen TV [c].
If you set the screen mode of the wide-screen TVto the zoom mode, a picture without black bandsappears [d].
16:9 FULL
The picture during recording in the 16:9 FULLmode [e], or playing back on a normal TV [f] or awide-screen TV [g] is horizontally compressed.

In the standby mode, set 16:9WIDE to CINEMAor 16:9FULL in the MENU settings (p. 64).
To cancel the wide mode

– Digital effect
You can add special effects to recorded picturesusing the various digital functions. The sound isrecorded normally.

You can record a still picture so that it issuperimposed on a moving picture.

AE function
You can select PROGRAM AE (Auto Exposure)mode to suit your specific shooting requirements.
Spotlight mode
This mode prevents people’s faces, for example,from appearing excessively white when shootingsubjects lit by strong light at weddings or in thetheatre.a Soft portrait mode
This mode brings out the subject while creating asoft background for subjects such as people orflowers, and faithfully reproduces skin colour.
A Sports lesson mode
This mode minimizes shake on fast-movingsubjects such as in tennis or golf.
Beach & ski mode
This mode prevents peoples’ faces fromappearing dark in strong light or reflected light,such as at a beach in midsummer or on a skislope.
Sunset & moon mode
This mode allows you to maintain atmospherewhen you are recording sunsets, general nightviews, fireworks displays and neon signs.
Landscape mode
This mode is for when you are recording distantsubjects such as mountains and prevents yourcamcorder from focusing on glass or metal meshin windows when you are recording a subjectbehind glass or a screen.

You can manually adjust and set the exposure.
When you turn your camcorder on, it willautomatically be in the automatic exposuremode. This mode works to record subjects so thatthey are recorded slightly brighter than theyactually are.
Adjust the exposure manually in the followingcases:• The subject is backlit
• Bright subject and dark background
• To record dark pictures (e.g. night scenes)faithfully
(1) Press EXPOSURE in the standby or recordingmode.
The exposure indicator appears.
(2) Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to adjust thebrightness.
To return to the automatic exposuremode
Press EXPOSURE again.
Note
When you adjust the exposure manually, thefollowing function and modes do not work:– Backlight
– Slow shutter
– Old movie
If you change the PROGRAM AE mode or slide
NIGHTSHOT to ON
Your camcorder automatically returns to theautomatic exposure mode.

You can gain better results by manually adjustingthe focus in the following cases:• The autofocus mode is not effective whenshooting
– subjects through glass coated with waterdroplets
– horizontal stripes
– subjects with little contrast with backgroundssuch as walls and sky
• When you want to change the focus from asubject in the foreground to a subject in thebackground
• Shooting a stationary subject when using atripod
(1)Set FOCUS to MANUAL in the standby orrecording mode. The f indicator appears.
(2)Turn NEAR/FAR to sharpen focus.
To return to the autofocus mode
Set FOCUS to AUTO.

To record distant subjects
When you press FOCUS down to INFINITY, thelens focuses on infinity. When you release
FOCUS, your camcorder returns to the manualfocus mode. Use this mode when your camcorderfocuses on near objects even though you aretrying to shoot a distant object.
Shooting in relatively dark places or shootingfast-moving subjects in relatively bright places
Shoot at the “W” (wide-angle) position afterfocusing at the “T” (telephoto) position.
When you shoot close to the subject
Focus at the end of the “W” (wide-angle)position.

Superimposing a title
You can select one of eight preset titles and twocustom titles (p. 55). You can also select thelanguage, colour, size and position of titles.
(1)Press TITLE in the standby mode.
(2)Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select ,then press the dial.
(3)Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to select thedesired title, then press the dial. The titles aredisplayed in the language you selected.
(4)Change the colour, size, or position, ifnecessary.
1 Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to selectthe colour, size, or position, then press thedial. The item appears.
2 Turn the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial to selectthe desired item, then press the dial.
3 Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the title is laidout as desired.
(5)Press the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial again tocomplete the setting.
(6) Press START/STOP to start recording.
(7) When you want to stop recording the title,press TITLE.
